    I have also heard of solaris, but never had a clue what it was.

    I am pretty sure that is the enterprise OS owned by Oracle. It is closed source.

    All I want is an os I can trust, that is logical, works, and stays out of my way.

    NetBSD or openBSD is your best bet. You will have to install the desktop environment yourself though, unless you like their cwm. FreeBSD is the most popular BSD, but they are using AI to find security vulnerabilities.
