Holy shit, I hated that tendency even back in the 90s.

Other person: “Oh you mean this techno?”
Sometimes, this conversation worked out and actually was techno…I didn’t want to be the WELPAXTUALLLEEE guy on it, but on the other hand, it’s not like we label every style of music that has electric guitar in it “rock and roll”.
