Is this just the tip of the iceberg?

It absolutely is just the tip.

Think about all the products out there that decided to save money by using a tiny SoC with a small amount of RAM. All that stuff is about to become too expensive to bother with anymore. Maybe we’ll go back to designing things without jamming computer components into every aspect.

No way will the computers come out of things that do not need them. They’ll just raise the prices and if you can’t afford it…get another job you lazy fuck and buy our stuff!

      P. S.

Who the fuck is buying a Switch 2? Did Nintendo remove the remote bricking feature? Did they stop bricking Switches for daring to buy a used game cart and play it?

I’m okay with this console generation lasting a lot longer than normal. Go into the 2030’s, even. We’re just not at the point yet where it feels justified. The gains are too negligible and the prices too steep to make it worth it.

I remember going from PS3 to PS4, we were all antsy for the next generation because the existing consoles had been pushed to the absolute limit and it was starting to show.

We’re not at that limit yet for the PS5. The fact that there are still so many games being made for the PS4 tells me that the demand just isn’t there yet.

Focus more on making the current gen cheaper and more accessible to get people off of the last gen. Put out a US$250 PS5 and US$500 PS5 Pro first, and then we can talk about what comes next.

I feel the same. There’s just no need, especially when the generational leaps have become so small. Hell, I didn’t buy a Switch 2 because I was still perfectly happy with the Switch which is objectively the weakest console of it’s generation. At this point it feels almost forced. These companies release new consoles and attempt to goad you into buying them by releasing exclusives for them when the existing hardware was still perfectly adequate.

The Switch has been showing its age, but I do feel like the Switch 2 should be good enough, l would be fine with freezing the industry at these specs forever. Any game that can’t hit 60fps on S2 ought to just cut back until it does.

The real problem is that developers won’t cut back, will they?

I don’t think it’s possible to get even just the Bill of Materials for the PS5 down to $250 (even without elevated prices for RAM and SSDs).

There are too many costs that do not scale with less powerful components.

Sure am glad we all get to subsidize people generating shitty ‘art’ and getting incorrect summaries!

More time to figure out how to market it or work on making sure there’s a multi-major video game lineup for each of the first like 3 years. Or commit to a major delay into the early 2030s for a bigger architecture upgrade like RDNA6/UDNA2 because I don’t think 9070xt rasterization performance with better ray tracing and AI upscaling is going to blow minds compared to PS5 games. Well, there’s barely anything out that can’t be played on a PS4 anyways. The PS6 definitely isn’t getting much of any 3rd party games that skip the PS5 let alone the Switch 2 and Steam Deck
