    I think people have lost sight of good things being possible, so when they hear something demonic it rings as honest whereas saying something genuinely helpful they think, “where’s the catch?”

    That and just the old classic of people wanting hurdles for the lower class they themselves are part of because they think it’ll hurt minorities too.

      the “how will we afford it” nonsense talking point of conservatives that’s pervasive

      The capitalist brainwashing is insidious. It reduces human’s worth to a number in their wealth portfolio. It separates “losers” and “winners” per social Darwinism. The “losers” are losers because of character defects, laziness, weakness and every other dehumanizing descriptor you can think of. Thus the lower classes buy this narrative and stay depressed and oppressed, blaming themselves for their lot; while the elites continuously pull up the ladder behind them.
