Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has won the Democratic nomination for governor of Wisconsin, according to a race call by the Associated Press. He narrowly defeated state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist whose campaign had challenged the party establishment.

Crowley had at one point actually suspended his foundering campaign, facing low poll ratings and scarce campaign funds. But he relaunched it days later with the backing of outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in an effort to turn back the momentum by Hong.

The Hong loss comes after progressives saw a series of wins in recent primaries around the country. But the narrow margin of the loss still signals Democratic voters seeking change.

They are flexing the level of power money has. “This guy wasn’t even in the race. He dropped out and came back. Got support from millions in donations and the endorsement of the current governor”.

They are spitting in our face with money and establishment power. And they only won by 0.4% (last I saw).

This is not the flex they think it is. This is only going to bring more people to our cause and motivate us to work harder.

Of course the comment history is filled with defense of Israel. Like, I shouldn’t be surprised at this point. But, shit, at least go to to a social media platform that you can get paid for it. Doing it on Lemmy is just pathetic. Get that AIPAC bag at least.

“Low poll ratings and scarce campaign funds” sounds like a great way to go into the general election. Sounds like Wisconsin dems prefer a republican governor over DSA.

All that goofy stuff she said in the past doomed her.

There is a good reason why Bernie Sanders, Mamdani and AOC refused to endorse her.

This is such nonsensical bullshit. A tweet Hong made about Thanksgiving 6 years ago is not indicative of her actual policies today. She was never going to use the power of Governor to cancel Thanksgiving or whatever.

David Crowley’s policies are far more likely to cancel Thanksgiving, what with him being friendly and open to opening data centers in the state. Data centers are highly unpopular in Wisconsin and Hong was the only Dem candidate willing to promise a moratorium on them like the people want. People making a big stink about “electability” or “Woke 1.0” are shifting attention away from important current day politics to nonsensical culture war distractions.

I agree with you, but it’s not great that we’ve cultivated an electorate that doesn’t account for people growing or changing their past positions.

Ah well, Wisconsin will get the representative they vote for; let’s hope it works out for them.

People have to prove they can change. Just saying you’re changed isn’t enough. And if people don’t want to be judged by the stupid shit they’ve said, maybe they shouldn’t have said the stupid shit. We live in a country where politicians make promises they never deliver on. It’s terrible optics to flip.

Disappointing but not too surprising. Hong had great positions and I liked her direct style, personally, but it was clear that “traditional” Dems would either want a more normie personality or a slicker package. With the stakes in November, voters are anxious. I don’t know know anything about Crowley, hopefully he’s decent enough to win

Wisconsin is not a state to take chances in. The fascists are trying real hard to dispel [D/d]emocracy in that state.

I’d argue a moderate candidate is more of a risk in today’s political climate, but we’re not there yet.

Democrats dodged a bullet. Hong almost certainly would have lost to Republican Tom Tiffany in November

How many times do we have to learn this lesson? Do we need another “electable” candidate like Hillary or Harris so they can lose to the couch? This isn’t 2016. You can’t really be believing this argument in 2026 can you?

How many times do we have to lose to Republicans with the “electable” candidate for people to realize that Americans will sit on the couch rather than vote for another “hope and change” candidate with no real policies?

The country hates Republicans and Trump so much right now and the Democrats are trying to get away with do nothing politicians again. Stop falling for this shit.

How many times do we have to “win”, nothing get better, and have the next election give us more people voting for fascist just to roll the dice on “change”.
