What Americans call “left” would be considered moderate conservative centre-right in any civilised country (anything left of that you’d call communism).
Your “leftist” politicians (the so called “democrats") are regular right wing conservative populists, with some extra ultracapitalism and religious fundamentalism sprinkled on top.
What you’d call right wing or conservative (republicans) are ultracapitalist ultrafundamentalist far right fringe maniacs.
