OMG, the right-wing pearl-clutching on this is amazing! Republicans have been pulling this stunt of recruiting spoiler candidates for a while. A couple were even prosecuted, as they allegedly used illegal campaign contributions to fund the spoiler campaign. However, in this instance the issue has been litigated in state court, and the matter went to the Alaska Supreme Court, and the aspect of election fairness was resolved. I’m not aware of any campaign law violations in this instance, the article cites none, and indeed the republican governor “directed Alaska’s Department of Public Safety to investigate whether an alleged scheme to recruit candidates . . . violated state election laws and whether criminal charges or civil action were warranted.” So this announcement is basically political posturing. I love how the New York Times report said it revealed “disturbing new evidence of an organized effort to manipulate Alaska’s elections by recruiting candidates.” Lol!
The NYT has a pathological need to both sides, even if it’s ridiculous. Reality has been to relentlessly one-sided so they’re trying to manufacturer their own October surprise. They really are a trash paper that shouldn’t be held in high regard.
