We should get rid of the dollar as an international currency, and also credit cards from MasterCard/VISA

Wish there was a goddamn alternative to MasterCard/VISA, or even a plan to create one. If I hear someone say Wero one more goddamn time…

Chinese UnionPay and Japan’s JCB are the only actual cards I know of that are globally accepted, though still not as universally as MasterCard or Visa. And I can’t actually get either card living in Europe. Not that I’d want a Chinese card any more than I like having my American cards.

Yeah Wero is more of a PayPal replacement than a credit card alternative.

The sad thing is that Italy has a Wero-like app, used especially in the North of the country, called Satispay. But apparently Satispay is not participating in the European Payment Initiative (EPI). And, the saddest things of them all, is that Satispay began as an alternative to credit cards, but now they issue a MasterCard so you can pay in every shop. Wtf the whole point of Satispay was not using American cards!

If you don’t have car manufacturers of your own, you’re probably best off buying Chinese at this point. They will spy on you, but so does everyone else and with Chinese cars you get the benefits of slave labour and near-free lithium batteries, environment be damned. We can never match that pricing in European cars.

The other great option is to tariff cars not built in Canada and watch car manufacturers build plants in your country, that’s pretty much what the US and EU both do to protect the auto industry and it’s part of the reason all of the big German and Japanese manufacturers have manufacturing plants in the US for example. Canada’s a smaller population to cater to, but big enough for some manufacturers with high sales volumes to build their own manufacturing plants. I bet Toyota would easily do it.

Of course at present it seems more likely that you will remove the tariffs on European cars in exchange for us removing tariffs on some important Canadian exports. Still better than buying gigantic pick-up trucks, but our manufacturers are lagging behind with EVs since ICE cars are still cheaper to build than EVs outside of China.

Canada is lucky the EU takes the time to engage with it. It would do well not to squander this opportunity. Give EU primary access to Canadian resources and minerals, in exchange for Nuclear deterrence and expedited immigration.

Canada gets people and nukes to protect from the US while EU gets discounted resources and a places to immigrate to.
