I am a little shocked at the lack of solidarity I see between artists working in different mediums wrt genAI.

Musicians who would never use it to make music use it to make cover art

Graphic artists reach for it to make music over their videos

Writers use it to illustrate their articles

And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.

None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.

Collaborate ffs.

Stop it.

AI at the end of the day is still just a tool, and it’s only used because it makes life easier. In this case, it’s much faster, easier, and cheaper to use AI to make passable slop vs paying talented people to make something that might be better but is also way more expensive and time consuming.

People in the creative industry protest AI out of self interest, and nothing more. The issues with AI matter when it applies to them but not when it applies to others. People in general are okay with sacrificing others for the sake of their convenience. Ethical integrity has always been rare, and I don’t see that changing soon.

      That is absolutely not true

Self-interest is part of the equation, but every conversation I’ve had with fellow artists regarding genAI included some manner of concern over what we do with Art as a society, the intentionality and the economics of it.

I protest genAI because what it produces picture-wise is meaningless, largely uncontrollable and ultimately an amalgamation of the training data it’s been fed.

The consequences of unchecked genAI usage are difficult to formulate because they cross many boundaries. GPS usage hurts spatial reasoning in people that rely on it exclusively, their ability to read a map.
We must question ourselves on what parts of the human mind are impacted by the existence of a tool that precludes the need to draw, represent, or even imagine something.

Depressing take. I also think it’s wrong. There are definitely some like you say, but definitely not all, and I doubt it’s even a majority.

If it is just a tool, why does most of the obviously LLM created cover art, look absolutely shitty and not even remotely passable? To me is such cover art a sure sign not to buy or to skip while streaming.
