Senators Mitch McConnell, Thom Tillis, Susan Collins, Alan Armstrong, Lisa Murkowski, and John Cornyn signed a letter along with six Democratic senators in opposition to the deal
Yeah, that’s only two Republicans. Mitch McConnell didn’t do shit: someone else did it for him and probably because they think he’ll never even know about it, just like all those AI press releases when he was absent for three months this year.
John Cornyn got primaried by Trump in favor of Paxton and Thom Tillis is not seeking reelection, so they won’t be around to “or else” behind it: it’s form and no more, a scribble on a page, only a softly spoken good bye and fuck you before they ride off into retirement.
And of course Susan Collins only votes for something like this when there is no possible chance of it ever having any effect whatsoever, and she’s fighting like hell to keep her seat in Maine by running ads in Oregon because she can’t find her own state with both hands and a flashlight.
That leaves two Republicans who both signed and could see it through if they want to.
On the other hand, I’m not familiar with Alan Armstrong, but he was the appointment to take Markwayne (jeez that name) Mullins’ Senate seat when Trump appointed him to Homeland Security, and he’s actually been to Ukraine. Might – might – be legit opposition to the Russia diesel. Lisa Murkowski has been as anti-Trump as a Republican can be, which is to say that while present it is almost undetectable. But her opposition might also be legit.
When a Republican is telling you the sky is blue, it’s always a good thing to check the window just to be sure. And of course, upon closer look this is no different.
