Asking for recommendations in how you might be getting around ID verification on websites and online marketplaces?

I want to be able to use my local online marketplace, but I keep getting asked to provide ID verification or my ads for second hand items dont recieve as many views as a result?

Edit: when referring to online marketplaces I was referring to second hand marketplaces like Carrot, Kijiji, Craigslist, Facebook.

It still didn’t come to me but I won’t use any feature or service locked behind a face scan or government issued ID document being provided, unless it’s a bank I use or my country’s government website.

Or I will provide a fake ID if I can make it work, but generally speaking I’d rather just not use that feature or service.

If this is what the internet is coming to, I want no part of it.

What the fuck, id check on a classifieds site? There are fake photo-of-id generators online if you’re not afraid to submit that. But it’s crazy that something like that is checked at all.

I really hope this pushes people back to Craigslist. The guy running that is a good dude.

Ya it’s really starting piss me off as online marketplaces worked for years with no ID verification. Everyone just used online aliases and everyone was happy.

I keep getting nagged to verify so my account can reach more buyers and so sellers can see I am “real”. Don’t feel like uploading a drivers license or passport but I can’t find a easy way around it. Unless I just stop using the site all together I suppose.

Since you’re already familiar with the Fediverse, you may be interested in Flohmarkt. It can serve as an alternative to those marketplaces.

Edit: updated the link to the list of instances.

For me, US specific sites are tricky. As in, if you are overseas, you cannot access them due to security reasons. For example; DMV sites. You need to use a VPN and choose a US server to access. Those sites usually always have ID verifications… and theres no way around them

I dont use services you listed, but i face similar ID verifications on similar sites. What i did: switch VPN to another countries. Sometimes it works though.

I can totally see sites wanting to identify sellers.
Scams would be way too easy and common without it.

But scammers can just use stolen IDs. So they would be able to get away, while the person who’s ID was used now gets cops showing up and lawsuits. I agree that it makes sense sites would want to have something. Just seems like much like other options, really low effort scammers might get stopped here and there, but everyone else has yet another way for their identification to be stolen. It is hard to figure out how to deal with very real problems for sure. Just seems like gov IDs should not be the only option with how bad sites are at data breeches. Though I am not sure what options would be good for the situations where needing to have tax documents tied to sales/income for regular people that don’t have like an LLC.

That’s always the case with any policy enforcement. By raising the difficulty, the problem becomes smaller. You have to accept it’ll never be eliminated.

Truly good scammers, even the victim won’t know they’ve been scammed. I was once sold a counterfeit memory card for my digital camera. I only noticed because the data rate was half what it should’ve been. Lots of people might not ever notice.

You can censor all data you haven’t already given them. In the EU it’s actually required to accept this.

I mean considering merchants generally need to identify themselves for tax purposes, it makes sense. Does your country and the local marketplace allow you to see up an LLC and use that identity?
