“Well, as a Republican, I can say one thing,” Ronald told Echevarria. “I think about 85% to 95% of the Republican Party has lost their minds, all right? It’s just so clear that my party’s been taken over by a bunch of loudmouths who are uneducated and unable to process any information beyond what they see on social media.”
I also love that this guy has no sense of self introspection here. No dumbass, your party wasn’t taken over, implying that it was other people’s fault, you voted for all of this, you voted for the morons.
It’s a bit of both. Yes, Republicans have a bad track record in general, bit also has they’ve gotten worse and more blatant about it.
I don’t know if this guy is a “Republican who voted in 2024 and now regrets the choices coming home to roost” or “somebody who has been a long time Republican but at least had enough brains not to vote for the racist goon squad more recently”, but at least there’s some growing awareness there.
The Republican party is gone. Now you’ve got the Appeasement party and the MAGA party and both could really benefit from jettisoning a bunch the members that have pushed them towards such and away from the people.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight since I’m more of a democratic socialist but the GOP has changed since I started voting in the late 80s, but not really taken over. It’s more like putting a tiny drop of food coloring in water. You didn’t really notice at first but eventually it’s quite obvious the color has changed. The favoring the rich has always been a common theme but the bend toward anti-intellectualism, single issue voters, racism, and pandering to the religious right were always there but it has definitely gotten way worse. So he’s not wrong it has changed. Could people like him have done more about this direction shift, hell yes. But in my opinion we need more of this realization to weed out this toxic behavior, not less.
