You are maybe talking specifiacally about “old rich white men”, perhaps?
Otherwise, this statement doesn’t make much sense in the Maldives context. They were under several collonial rules for centuries and gained their independence from the british not that long ago, in the 60’s, well kinda. Plenty of old people there have been fighting for a just society since their youth, and I cannot blame them for their decisions. And the young ones take their turn now.
