I like that actually.
They pollute the air from fossil fuels used to power them causing people to get sick and making the climate worse
They pollute our water through their massive cooling needs, contaminating the water and expelling their sludge into ecosystems, destroying them while also pumping out massive amounts of water, depleting aquifers amd wells leaving residents with nothing but sludge in their pipes
They pollute the electrical grid with their massive loads destabilizing it and leaving residents without power, soon to be rolling blackouts, at which private utility companies will increase rates on residents to build infrastructure for them (and all the destruction that comes with it)
They pollute noise quality with both audible and infrasound causing people to get sick and causing local fauna to flee, decimating the environments miles around them
They pollute the internet and our knowledge altogether with slop and hallucinations, devaluing human creativity, knowledge, and labor
They pollute our mental health, causing people to experience psychosis, isolate themselves further, and even deciding to end their own lives snuffing out any potential they once had
They pollute our communities, making spaces unlivable for many and even using eminent domain to remove people from their homes all while promising to bring in new communities through the 4 new long term jobs they add to the area
They pollute our towns and cities, forcing themselves in and siphoning our taxes away causing a decline in other protections and services as funding gets redirected, potholes don’t get filled, schools close, services get cut
They pollute our economy, passing circular money between businesses while devaluing human labor and further privatize gains while socializing losses to eventually leave the taxpayer to pick up the collapse
They pollute our society as they enrich capitalists, already experiencing psychosis from surrounding themselves with yes men, and allow them to further dismantle institutions to protect workers
I could probably keep going but that’s just top of mind.
Wtf, you really believe days centers are responsible for wild fires? Bro, we have hundreds of years of polluting entities that have caused this. There aren’t enough dcs to make a marketable affect on the environment in a large scale yet.
hundreds of years of prep but the spark can still be blamed on a new tech. the problem is that we keep enabling corps and laws that support both the spark and fire loads.
No it can’t. So being disingenious.
if you spent decades not cleaning fire load from your land and i come in and start a neglegant fire that spreads, who is to blame? source: am actual firefighter.
stop being so thick. there can be multiple systems at fault here.
What utter bollocks. Companies all over the world use DCs including GreenPeace for hosting their websites and internal network infrastructure used by their employees.
I prefer that they keep the association with AI. It has been very effective bad press for AI to the average offline person
Stop calling it AI. It’s not an intelligence.
Well, artificial leather is not actually leather. You just need to draw a little string from “artificial” to “fake”.
plintelligence kind of rolls off the tongue but not really
AI as a term is constantly changing when it comes to what we actually consider to be meeting its criteria. When chess playing bots were starting to get really good in the 90s for example, people commonly considered that the pinnacle of AI until they got used to it and started to dissociate from that. Rinse and repeat with LLMs today.
Besides, AI is a field, not necessarily a technology, and the capabilities a computer requires for it to be considered “intelligent” aren’t even remotely similar to that of a human being. You can consider a computer intelligent without it being necessarily illogical.
The context has changed. It’s destroying neighborhoods, property values, home computing, water, electricity bills, etc on a global scale precisely when we’re running low and prices are too high.
That is in no way comparable to a chess bot.
I don’t disagree. My point though is that artificial intelligence and what can be considered as such isn’t the same as what can be considered human intelligence. They don’t share very many mutual aspects aside from those on a very broad and non-specific scale. Therefore considering things such as LLMs an AI isn’t necessarily a misnomer.
It’s intelligence as in mass surveillance.
CSAM factories
Until the bubble bursts, then serveilence centers
It’s such a fucking shame, because it is possible to have reasonable data centers. The modern internet and plenty of business tech is built on it. Just basic disaster recovery practice of not having your data immediately on site, you have it on hardware at a data center, potentially mirrored between two physical locations.
But like everything in tech-bro land, the hyper scaling pursuit of infinite growth just fucking ruins it.
Machine learning has been used by the scientific community for fucking decades, but now you get it to vomit halfway convincing text output and everyone starts acting like the infinite money machine has been found.
Fucking unrestrained capitalism ruining everything.
Some times I do wonder if we’re not all trapped in a Captain Planet episode and the pollution centres are here because Heart is still on his evil arc.
These fires would still be happening if we never built a single AI focused data center. They haven’t been around long enough to make a dent compared to all the other sources of emissions
Loot boxes.
85% of wildfires are caused by direct human ignition.

Ruining everything centers
Maybe “wealth concentrators”.
