The majority of fertilizers used for crop production in the U.S. are applied to corn, wheat, and soybeans. USDA survey data suggest that fertilizers used for these crops have accounted for 92%, 94% and 95% of total applications of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), and potassium (K), respectively, since 2002[1] (National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) Agricultural Chemical Use Program).
I mean outside of wheat, the other two Americans don’t eat directly anyways.
We’d probably be okay with a reduction in fertilizer and like you said went back to crop rotation that small farmers still use where I grew up, actually planted crops for directly eating and of course upheave the entire corporate ag as we know it, I think the impacts to produce would be, I won’t say mitigated, but manageable.
It’s probably a good idea to stop using nitrogen-based fertilizer, or at least greatly reduce usage of it, reduce pesticide/herbicide usage and decrease use of GMO monocropping. Vertical farming for non-grains is an option, too.
We’re going to go the way of the Mayans if changes aren’t made. The current slowdown and eventual population decline are also positive developments in this scenario.

Also, veganic farming is a thing.
