If the Democrats lose the upcoming midterm elections, our path out of competitive authoritarianism gets a lot longer, or disappears altogether. The political winds are at the Democrats’ backs, but the structure of our electoral system cuts against them. It could come down to a few close races. So the party is—very understandably—anxious to get its strategy right and not to leave gettable votes on the table.
And many centrist think tanks, columnists, and pundits have a pitch for an easy way to win more support: “Moderate” on trans rights.

It’s socialists winning elections, even when massively outspent. Moderates are getting sidelined. It’s flawed logic to assume the people want more moderate bullshit. Every attack on the trans community will push voters away.
Centrists are, in my opinion, out of touch with a lot of voters. The tactics and policies from the Bill Clinton and Obama era are not what the majority of people want. When republicans move further right, centrists move to the right too.
Unless you’re a demented sociopathic corrupt rapist, running for office is very weird and difficult, not to mention mostly irrelevant to the job being run for.
It’s understandable candidates want good advice from professionals who do this sort of thing. Sadly it usually tends to go poorly for the Democrats who inevitably try something they are recommended to be uniting or emphasizing some common ground that almost everyone hates for any number of reasons.
And that’s before they get shafted by a publicity photo, a private photo, a misused audio track, or the propaganda arms of foreign states.
Great political talents like Clinton, Obama, AOC and Mamdani are few and far between. It’s an open field but most don’t wanna get in there and those that do usually aren’t great at it.
Check out Forward Party. Their policies are supposed to be straight forward, clear, data driven. Anyone endorsed by them signs an ethics and values agreement for truth-telling and honesty, etc.
I know people seem to hate centrists, but it makes the most sense to me. Honestly George Washington warned the nation at his farewell address about loyalty to parties, and we fucked that up right away! We say the “Pledge of Allegiance” in school “to the flag”, not a party.
The Forward Party famously doesn’t have policies. And every serving politician takes an oath of office that claims to be serving the nation. Proclamations of ethical adherence are just words.
